Why do you hit M4 after reloading?

It sits in the lower receiver. When the magazine is empty, the follower presses up on that little protrusion you can see on the front of the bolt catch. When actuated, this causes the bolt of the M16/M4/AR15 to become locked rearward. The purpose of this is to aid in reloading quickly.
