Why does alcohol not react with NaOH?

R : Ethoxide ion is stronger base than hydroxide ion. NaOH when reacts with water forms ethoxide ion but due to its basicity it abstract hydrogen reforming alcohol. hence alcohols does not reacts with the base.

Why phenol does not react with sodium hydroxide?

Phenol is a weak acid and aqueous sodium hydroxide is a strong base. So, this reaction is a weak acid – strong base reaction. Formed product, sodium phenoxide is a moderately strong base.

What happens when phenol react with NaOH?

Phenol reacts with sodium hydroxide solution to give a colourless solution containing sodium phenoxide. In this reaction, the hydrogen ion has been removed by the strongly basic hydroxide ion in the sodium hydroxide solution.

What happens when alcohol reacts with NaOH?

When an alcohol is treated with sodium hydroxide, the following acid-base equilibrium occurs. Most alcohols are slightly weaker acids than water so the left side is favored. The elimination of water from an alcohol is called dehydration.

Why phenol does not react with sodium carbonate?

Phenol is acidic in nature but they are weakly acidic in nature. As other acids, They turn blue litmus red and react with alkali metals and alkalies to form their salts. Hence it does not react with sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate.

Can NaOH Deprotonate phenol?

Sodium hydroxide can be used to fully deprotonate a phenol. Water soluble alcohols do not change the pH of the solution and are considered neutral.

Can phenol react with Na?

Phenol reacts with sodium and form sodium phenoxide and hydrogen gas. This is an acid – metal reaction. We know that phenol is a weak acid and sodium is a metal.

Why does ethanol not react to the extent that naphthol does with sodium hydroxide?

Why does ethanol not react to the extent that naphthol does with sodium hydroxide? Ethanol does not create an oxygen that is resonance stabilized when they react making the naphtol reaction more reactive with iodobutane. NaOH is a stronger base than ethanol is.

Why is sodium not used to test for alcohols?

To test for the -OH group in alcohols: Because of the dangers involved in handling sodium, this is not the best test for an alcohol at this level. Because sodium reacts violently with acids to produce a salt and hydrogen, you would first have to be sure that the liquid you were testing was neutral.
