Why does ATP have a ribose?

Phosphate couldn’t move around in cells without reacting with everything around itself. Therefore when it is bound with Adenosine (adenine + ribose) it decreases the reactivity of the phosphates. As a result only specific molecular machinery is able to react with ATP and steal it’s energy/phosphate.

Why does the phosphate end of ATP store potential energy?

When a phosphate group is pulled away during a chemical reaction, energy is released. Each phosphate group is negatively charged. Because like charges repel, the crowding of negative charge in the ATP tail contributes to the potential energy stored in ATP.
