Why does MgO have a high melting point than Mgcl?

As the charge in the ionic lattice in Magnesium Oxide is two times as large, the ionic bonding is stronger so more energy is required to overcome the electrostatic attraction and break down the ionic lattice.

Why does MgO have a higher boiling point and melting point than NaCl?

NaCl contains attraction between Na+ & Cl- ions, whereas in MgO the attraction is between Mg+2 and O-2 ions, the attraction between ions in MgO is greater than NaCl. Therefore MgO will exhibit a higher melting temperature.

When the bond between magnesium and fluorine is being formed, the electrons must divide equally between the two fluorine atoms, giving each only one electron.
