The animation is different and Ash looks different because of new technology and techniques designed to make the animation. Although it may seem “weird”, I only recently started watching Sun and Moon and was ASTOUNDED.

Why did they change Ash in Pokemon?

The original head writer of the Pokemon anime wanted to avoid an infamous, perpetual quality that’s currently plaguing Ash’s character. The Pokemon anime has forced Ash Ketchum to be ten years old for over 20 years now, stifling his growth as a character to keep him on par with younger audiences.

Ash Ketchum was indeed ten years old when he started, but he is ageless – since the beginning of the show until now, Ash has become an icon, a legend, like Mickey Mouse. But Mickey Mouse doesn’t look 75 years old (although he is), and the same goes for Ash.

The most common reason for lackluster animation in a weekly series is time restraints and the increasingly bad scheduling that’s making anime more and more difficult to produce.

Okay so, Pokémon sun and moon’s ash does look different from the other series’s like, diamond and pearl for example. I can’t answer this directly but I can say that in sun and moon, ash does go to school with other kids, so if he looked older as he usually did, he would look out of place.

They make him look younger because the series required him to be so. As you would have watched, the battles in Sun & Moon series were more detailed and due to the Z-Moves,it made them look more firece. And the previous animations would not suit in the Z-move poses and the battles in the series. So that’s why they had to change the animation style.

Why is ash from Pokemon so boring?

He’s… moving! Compare this to XY (Z), where although the Pokemon battled in interesting ways, Ash got the short end of the stick. He was boring to work with, so many of Ash’s movements were simple or stock animations. Sun and Moon’s style allows for a much more dynamic character.
