Why does shaking a flashlight make it work?

Inside the see through plastic body of the flashlight is a round silver magnet with a hole in the middle. The magnet rides along a shaft that has a copper coil on it. When you shake it, the magnet moves over the coil and creates electricity. The flashlight gives off a bluish LED light.

Why does a flashlight stop working?
