Why does the Dalai Lama eat meat?

During his early years in Tibet, the Dalai Lama would have eaten meat as part of his diet because of the country’s reliance on consumable livestock in lieu of sufficient vegetable crops. In 2010, he told NDTV that he usually eats meat once or twice a week, and otherwise lives as a vegetarian.
