Why does the distance between stirrups reduce at the support?

The spacing of Vertical Stirrups is minimum near the Supports due to Maximum shear force at the Supports.

Why stirrups are closely spaced near the supports?

To reduce the chance of spalling of concrete we provide better confinement at the ends for a greater ductility and performance.

What are the limits for spacing of shear reinforcement?

1.5 of IS 456 stipulates that the maximum spacing of shear reinforcement measured along the axis of the member shall not be more than 0.75 d for vertical stirrups and d for inclined stirrups at 45o, where d is the effective depth of the section. However, the spacing shall not exceed 300 mm in any case.

What is the maximum spacing for shear stirrups?

According to cl. 26.5. 1.5 of IS 456, the maximum spacing of the stirrups = 0.75 d = 0.75 (450) = 337.5 mm = 300 mm (say).

Why stirrups are provided in column?

Stirrups are provided to hold the main reinforcement rebars [1] together in an RCC structure. Stirrups are placed at proper intervals to beams and columns to prevent them from buckling. Also, they protect RCC structures from collapsing during seismic activities (earthquakes).

What is the purpose of stirrups in columns?

The important purpose of the stirrup is to hold the primary reinforcement bars properly. The stirrup prevents columns and beams from buckling phenomena. The stirrups get placed diagonally when there are tension and compression caused by vertical and transverse tension.

What should be provided if the shear force due to ultimate load is less than the shear force of the concrete?

Explanation: When V the shear force due to ultimate loads is less than the shear force of the concrete vc, the shear force which can be carried by the concrete, a minimum shear reinforcement should be provided in the form of stirrups with spacing.

What is the reasons for providing minimum shear reinforcement in the form of stirrups?

Minimum shear reinforcement in beams is provided in the form of stirrups

  • to resist the extra shear force due to live load.
  • to resist the effect of shrinkage of concrete.
  • to resist the principal tension.
  • to resist the shear cracks at the bottom of beam.

What is the main purpose of stirrups?

Why stirrups are provided vertically?

Figure 1: Steel reinforcement in beams – stirrups prevent longitudinal bars from bending outwards. Figure 2: Two types of damage in a beam: flexure damage is preferred. Longitudinal bars resist the tension forces due to bending while vertical stirrups resist shear forces.
