Why does the Hudson River have tides?

The tides in the Hudson come from the rising and falling of the water at the mouth of the river, not the direct action of the moon. The estuarine portion of the Hudson River ranges from New York City to Troy. The smaller blue arrow at the mouth of the ocean shows the movement of the water at that location.

1. The East River is Not Actually a River. Previously, we explained why the Hudson River is not technically a river, but an estuary. Similarly, the East River is actually a “salt water tidal strait” since it’s not comprised of any fresh water.
