Why is BF3 covalent and not ionic?

It follows, therefore, that an atom will tend to make as many covalent bonds as possible. In the case of boron in BF3, three bonds is the maximum possible because boron only has 3 electrons to share. You might perhaps wonder why boron doesn’t form ionic bonds with fluorine instead.

How are ionic bonds different from covalent?

The covalent bond is formed when two atoms are able to share electrons whereas the ionic bond is formed when the “sharing” is so unequal that an electron from atom A is completely lost to atom B, resulting in a pair of ions. Ionic bonds normally form crystalline compounds and have higher melting points and boiling points compared to covalent compounds.
