Why is dual slope ADC accurate?

The dual-slope ADC has many advantages. Noise present on the input voltage is reduced by averaging. The value of the capacitor and conversion clock do not affect conversion accuracy, since they act equivalently on the up-slope and down-slope.

What is the significance of dual slope method?

What is the significance of the name dual slope method? Explanation: The input signal is integrated only for a fixed interval of time and this is the basis for the dual slope method. Reference voltage is integrated with a negative slope. Hence the method is known as dual slope integrating type DVM.

How does a dual slope ADC work?

Dual-Slope ADC Architecture A dual-slope ADC (DS-ADC) integrates an unknown input voltage (VIN) for a fixed amount of time (TINT), then “de-integrates” (TDEINT) using a known reference voltage (VREF) for a variable amount of time (see Figure 2).

Which ADC is preferred the most?

Sigma–Delta ADCs–for Higher Accuracy from More Bits When you want the accuracy from more sampling bits or really need the highest effective number of bits (ENOB), sigma-delta ADCs are usually the best choice, especially for low-noise precision applications.

What are the advantages of dual slope DVM?

The advantages of this technique are: i) Excellent noise rejection as noise and superimposed a.c. are averaged out during the process of integration. ii) The RC time constant does not affect the input voltage measurement. iii)The capacitor is connected via an electronic switch.

What is a dual slope ADC?

In dual slope type ADC, the integrator generates two different ramps, one with the known analog input voltage VA and another with a known reference voltage –Vref. Hence it is called a s dual slope A to D converter.

Why is dual ADC called indirect ADC?

In general, first it converts the analog input into a linear function of time (or frequency) and then it will produce the digital (binary) output. Dual slope ADC is the best example of an Indirect type ADC.

What is dual slope type ADC?

Comparison of major ADC Types

ADC Type Pros Max Resolution
Successive Approximation (SAR) Good speed/resolution ratio 18 bits
Delta-sigma (ΔΣ) High dynamic performance, inherent anti-aliasing protection 32 bits
Dual Slope Accurate, inexpensive 20 bits
Pipelined Very fast 16 bits

What is dual slope integrating type of ADC?

Figure-5 depicts block diagram of Dual Slope Integrating type ADC. It is used in the design of digital voltmeter. For n bit dual slop type of ADC, Advantages: It is more accurate ADC type among all. It has greater noise immunity compare to other ADC types. Disadvantages: It is the slowest ADC among all.

Which is the best example of an indirect type ADC?

Dual slope ADC is the best example of an Indirect type ADC. This chapter discusses about it in detail. As the name suggests, a dual slope ADC produces an equivalent digital output for a corresponding analog input by using two (dual) slope technique.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of SAR type of ADC?

In SAR type of ADC, conversion time is uniform for any analog voltage and it is equal to n*T CLK . Advantages: It is capable of high speed. It has medium accuracy compare to other ADC types. Disadvantages : High resolution type of SAR ADC will be slower.

What is the maximum conversion time of parallel comparator ADC?

Maximum conversion time is equal to (2 n -1 )* T CLK for n-bit of ADC. The conversion time depends on analog input voltage. Figure-2 depicts block diagram of parallel comparator ADC or 2 bit flash ADC. It is the fastest ADC among all the ADC types.
