Why is McKinsey over Bain and BCG?

McKinsey tends to have a more top-down approach and usually takes pride in challenging and often contradicting clients. They do cooperate with clients but tend to be quite assertive in pushing forward their solution. BCG is slightly more “cooperative”, putting a special emphasis on “delighting” clients.

What makes McKinsey different?

Another thing that makes McKinsey unique is that it operates as a global network in order to “bring the best of McKinsey” to the client. This means that a McKinsey consultant in one office can reach out to someone they haven’t met in any office to get information on best practices that will help their client.

What is different about BCG?

BCG has functional expertise, but it also boasts creative problem solving by offering its clients a fresh and unique framework with every case. It pushes consultants to think outside the box and to avoid fitting one client’s solutions to another client’s problems.

What is the difference between BCG and Bain and McKinsey?

The difference in the selection process is mainly in the type of case interviews that the firms conduct for job applicants. While McKinsey prefers an interviewer-led approach, BCG and Bain take a candidate-led approach (see our blog: How to prepare for case interviews ).

What is the difference between McKinsey and other consulting firms?

However, the firms do show some differentiation: McKinsey has historically been very strong in strategy, organization and operation work, and has the larger footprint in the Education, Public Sector and Telco space. That said, by virtue of its larger size, McKinsey usually has the deeper roster of client relationships across most industries.

How many employees does Bain and BCG have?

BCG’s 18,500 employees, including 7,000 consultants, work from its over 90 offices around the globe. Its annual revenue in 2018 was $7.5 billion. Bain, the smallest of the Big 3, was set up in 1973 by BCG colleagues William W. Bain Jr. and Patrick F. Graham.

What is the average growth rate of BCG and McKinsey?

BCG and McKinsey have both been growing at rapid rates exceeding 10\% a year, which is impressive given the average growth rates of most developed economies are around 2-3\% per year. This could still be because of the size differences of the firms.
