Why is my boa shedding so much?
Shedding is a normal part of life for boas. Unlike mammals, which constantly shed to accommodate growth and renew cells, snakes and other reptiles shed their skin all at once at certain intervals. Young, growing snakes shed often while adult snakes tend to shed less often.
How often should a red tail boa shed?
about four to five sheds per year
The younger the snake is, the shorter the intervals between sheds. Due to the high growth potential of young snakes, neonates and hatchlings can shed up to 9 times a year, if fed intensively (which should not be practiced that way). In adult boas, about four to five sheds per year are normal.
Why is my snake still shedding?
For those new to reptile care, the first thing to mention is that regular shedding of a snake’s skin is a completely normal and healthy process. Just like human skin continually re-generates, snakes shed their old skin to allow for new growth.
How often should my snake be shedding?
The interval between sheds depends on several factors, including the age of the snake as well as its growth rate and environment. Young snakes that are growing rapidly shed frequently—every few weeks—while adult snakes shed less often, sometimes only a few times a year or less.
How can I help my boa shed?
During this time, add a warm basin of water to your snake’s cage. You can help your snake shed by placing a basin of warm water inside its enclosure. Your snake will be able to bath in the water, allowing its skin to come off more easily. Pick a basin that is big enough to hold your snake’s entire body.
How do I know if my red tail boa is happy?
Learning the signs of illness and what constitutes normal behavior and habits will go a long way to help you keep her healthy and happy.
- Healthy Appetite. A healthy appetite is always a good sign that your pet boa constrictor is healthy.
- No Regurgitation.

How can I help my snake stop shedding?
The bath route isn’t the only way you can help your shedding snake. You can also try putting something with a coarse texture in her living environment. Tree branches and stones often do the trick. If your snake can massage her body against something rather uneven, it might help her skin come off easier.
Should I feed my snake while its shedding?
While you can feed a snake while it is shedding, feeding live food during shedding can be dangerous since a snake’s senses are dimmed by the shedding process, and so a live animal could injure a snake while it is vulnerable. Most snakes will avoid food during this period.
