Why is San Francisco called the Bay Area?

At the time, Drakes Bay went by the name Bahia de San Francisco and thus both bodies of water became associated with the name. Eventually, the larger, more important body of water fully appropriated the name San Francisco Bay.

People here definitely call it The Bay, but often use The Bay Area as well. Depends lightly on context for which is used. I’m born and raised here, and we definitely refer to the regional Bay Area as “the bay”. First visited San Francisco & Berkeley the summer of 1955.
