Why is the bar exam important?

The bar exam became a test to see if a person has the skills and ability to practice. One day is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) that tests fundamental subjects – torts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, property, contracts, constitutional law and now civil procedure.

Why do people want to abolish the bar exam?

Abolishing the bar exam makes it truly possible for state bar associations to equally serve their members, the profession, and the public by defending liberty and delivering justice as the national representative of the legal profession.

What does bar exam mean?

It stands for the State Bar. In order to practice law in the US, you must be a member of the State Bar of the state where you practice. To do this, you must first get a JD degree (or, in some states, “read” for the bar under the supervision of a practicing lawyer). Then you must pass the “bar examination”.

The California study, released in 2018 and focused on bar exam performance changes, found that for its state bar exams given in 2013, 2016 and 2017, the overall pass rate was 55\% for minorities and 69\% for nonminorities.

This version of the bar exam consisted only of essays until the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) was developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners after receiving a grant from the American Bar Association to create a six-hour, six-topic, equal opportunity test for future lawyers.
