Why Mumbai Police is after Republic TV?

The Mumbai Police has named Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-chief of Republic TV as an accused in the Television Rating Points Scam(TRP), nine months after registering an FIR in the case and ex- Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh naming the channel as being involved in the scam.

What is the issue with Republic TV?

It has been convicted of breaching Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and News Broadcasting Standards Authority rules. Republic TV is being investigated by the Mumbai Police after being accused of manipulating the viewership ratings. The inflated TRP was allegedly used to bargain higher revenues from advertisers.

Param Bir Singh, declared an ‘absconding accused’ on November 17 in an extortion case, is a 1988-batch IPS officer who took over as Police Commissioner of Mumbai from Sanjay Barve in February 2020. He was transferred as Director General of Maharashtra Home Guard in March 2021.

Several television news channels were accused of tampering with the TRPs by the Mumbai Police in October last year. The police claimed they busted a TRP manipulation racket following a probe initiated after a complaint by TV viewership measurement agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).

The Supreme court of India rejected the plea from the channel to protect its employees from arrest. On 13 December 2020, Republic TV’s CEO Vikas Khanchandani was arrested by Mumbai police. Later on 16 December, he was granted bail by a sessions court.
