Will dry firing hurt my gun?

Dry fire does not pose any real risk of damage to most modern centerfire firearms; however, it can for rimfire weapons, where the firing pin in most designs will impact the breech face if the weapon is dry-fired.

Which guns can be dry fired?

Dry firing most centerfire rifles and handguns is generally safe. There are a few exceptions, like older pistols, with the key being the durability of the firing pin. When dry fired, the firing pin on centerfire rifles and some semiautomatic weapons travels until it hits the end of the channel.

Why is striker fired so popular?

The advantages of a striker-fired system is that they have far fewer moving parts, and often have numerous internal safeties built in that ensure they are very safe. They also tend to be a bit lighter, and are often found in polymer-framed pistols (with the unique XD-E being an exception).

Dry firing is the simple act of “firing” the gun without a live round in the chamber. For the Glock/SIG/M&P and other semiautomatic handgun this means you rack the slide without any lives rounds, point the gun in a safe direction (as you always should) and pull the trigger.
