Will Blue Origin go orbital?

First came the tourists. The new commercial space station will be called Orbital Reef, and Blue Origin — which is owned by billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — says that by the end of the 2020s, it will become “the premier mixed-use space station in low Earth orbit for commerce, research, and tourism.”

Is Blue Origin behind SpaceX?

If there were any rocket company expected to be at a comparable level of technological achievement to SpaceX, it is Blue Origin. The company was founded by the former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2000, just two years before SpaceX set up shop in California.

What does RSS stand for in Blue Origin?

Blue Origin uses its RSS First Step (RSS is short for Reusable Space Ship) for crewed flights. A different New Shepard capsule, called RSS H.G. Wells, is used for uncrewed science flights.

Is New Glenn ever going to fly?

In February 2021, Blue Origin announced that it pushed the launch back from late 2021 to the fourth quarter of 2022. The BE-4 engine from New Glenn will also power United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket. The engine is expected to be delivered this year ahead of Vulcan’s first flight.

The Blue Origin payload user’s guide claims the upcoming New Glenn fairing measures seven meters (23 feet) wide, 21.9 meters (72 feet) high, and offers an internal usable volume that measures “at least” 450 cubic meters (16,000 cubic feet).

When will the New Glenn rocket launch?

Design work on the vehicle began in 2012 and it is expected to make its initial test launch prior to 2020. New Glenn is described as a 7-meter-diameter (23 ft), two- or three-stage rocket. Its first stage will be powered by seven BE-4 engines that are also being designed and manufactured by Blue Origin.
