Technically speaking a diamond can be broken, but in actual practice, it is very difficult to break a diamond. You have to hit it in the exact right spot and then also ensure that you are using enough force.

What happens when a diamond is cut?

Diamond manufacturers cut a groove in the diamond with a laser or saw, and then split the diamond with a steel blade. Sawing is the use of a diamond saw or laser to cut the diamond rough into separate pieces. Unlike cleaving, this step does not involve cleavage planes. This step gives diamonds their initial shape.

Can you cut a diamond in half?

No way – cutting it is not a god idea. Bigger diamonds are more valuable so if you cut it down into small pieces you may loose most of its value.

Fracture. A breakage in diamonds that is not parallel to the cleavage plane is referred to as a fracture. Fractures are usually irregular in shape, making a diamond look chipped. The practice of fracture filling is commonly employed to improve the diamond clarity of such diamonds.

What can damage a diamond?

Sudden extreme temperature changes can cause damage, however. Diamonds can chip or fracture from hard impact, especially in areas where the carbon atoms are not tightly bonded. These areas, called cleavage planes, are the major source of damage to diamonds (figure 2).

Can diamonds shatter if dropped?

What happens when a diamond is recut?

When a diamond is recut, it needs to be recertified. You may even find the value goes up if inclusions are removed or the symmetry and polish improve on the stone, but this is never guaranteed. You can also talk with your jeweler about resetting your stone to hide a small chip or insignificant damage.

What are the disadvantages of diamonds?

A diamond with low clarity grade and a poor cut grade ( crowns that are too shallow or extremely thin girdle thickness) will be more susceptible to damage when subjected to external forces. From a mechanical view of the crystalline structure, severely included diamonds have weaker integrity due to the presence of defects and foreign materials.

What is the relationship between diamond quality and breakability?

There is also a direct relationship between the quality of the diamond and its “breakability”. A diamond with low clarity grade and a poor cut grade ( crowns that are too shallow or extremely thin girdle thickness) will be more susceptible to damage when subjected to external forces.
