Can a photon have negative energy?

Photons can’t have negative energies. They either don’t have energy or they have energy. It’s always going to be a positive. A change can be positive or negative, and as an electron transitions down, its change energy is negative, but a photon must have a positive energy.

Are electromagnetic waves negative or positive?

Electromagnetic Wave: Electromagnetic waves are a self-propagating transverse wave of oscillating electric and magnetic fields. The direction of the electric field is indicated in blue, the magnetic field in red, and the wave propagates in the positive x-direction.

Are photons electromagnetic energy?

What is a Photon? A photon is the carrier of the electromagnetic force and is the quantum form of all electromagnetic radiation. This includes, light, radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, gamma rays and more.

Do photons have positive energy?

It is one of the quanta of light, which is an electromagnetic waves, with positive energy. Photon can be created by many physical processes, such as matter-antimatter annihilation, or as x-ray due to acceleration or deceleration of electrons.

Can a photon have negative momentum?

In a head on collision experiment (such as LEP) a virtual photon which is produced has a lot of energy but little 3-momentum then q2 is negative, on the other hand in deep inelastic scattering experiments we find that a virtual photon may have a lot of 3-momentum but less energy then q2 is positive.

Does an electron have negative energy?

When the electron is bound to the atom with any closer value of n, its energy is lower and is therefore negative. Thus, all energy states of an electron, including the ground state, have negative energies.

What type of waves do not require matter to carry energy?

Waves that can travel through space where there is no matter are electromagnetic waves. There are different types of electromagnetic waves, including radio waves, X rays, and gamma rays.

What is a photon positive or negative?

Photons have neither negative nor positive charge. They are not matter and have no mass. They travel the speed of light when in a vacuum like in outer space (which is not a complete vacuum, really).

Do photons create electromagnetic waves?

Photons are particles forming the electromagnetic field and they are also waves. Their de Broglie wavelength is the same that the one associated to their wavelength of the electromagnetic field. And the electromagnetic wave propagates at the velocity of light as the photons contained within the electromagnetic field.

Does physics have negative energy?

Negative energy is a concept used in physics to explain the nature of certain fields, including the gravitational field and various quantum field effects.

Can a photon have zero energy?

The speed of a photon does not affect its energy. It has zero mass, therefore zero kinetic energy. The energy it has is due to its frequency (color), and nothing else. (However, it does have momentum!)

Why is light considered an electromagnetic wave?

Hence, light is an electromagnetic wave. Light consists of photons; and thus each photon carries a unit of energy. This behavior is demonstrated by the photoelectric and Compton effects. Since light is an electromagnetic energy, photons must also carry electromagnetic field and a unit of it.

What is the meaning of a negative energy photon?

A negative energy photon means that an excited atom state, upon absorption of this negative energy photon (with frequency matching the energy level), would, instead of stimulated emission, collapse back to ground level. The energy of the photon is absorbed in the past emitter.

Do electromagnetic waves have energy and momentum?

These waves do have energy and momentum, by the way; there is no need for a particle concept there, the classical theory of continuous fields can deal with energy and momentum just fine. However… Maxwell’s classical theory of electromagnetism is just not good enough. It does not fully agree with observation.

Why can’t a charge-less photon have electric and magnetic fields?

At the same time while a moving charged particle has its self electric field, and magnetic field that depend on the particle velocity, the photon, the carrier of the electromagnetic energy is void of these self-fields because it has no charge and mass. Thus, a charge-less photon can’t have electric and magnetic fields accompanying its motion.
