Can German speakers understand Bavarian?

That would depend on which part of Germany they are from and if their local dialect is related to Bavarian German, there are even Bavarians who speak standard German as well as their dialect. I speak standard German, grew up in southern Germany (Stuttgart) and have no problems at all understanding Bavarian dialects.
