Can I plumb my sump pump into the sewer?

Answer: Although it may be legal in your region to connect your sump pump to the sewer line, in most of the United States it is illegal to connect your sump pump to your sewer line. When there is heavy rainfall, the sewage treatment plants can become overloaded.

Can I connect your sump pump discharge hose to the sewer line?

It might seem like the most convenient route for discharge, but when a sump pump connects to the sanitary line, there is the potential for sewers may fill beyond capacity. This, in turn, creates a heightened risk of water and sewage coming back up through your pipes and damaging your home.
