Can you leave AIT for Christmas?

The Army is the only branch of the military that honors the Christmas Exodus break for all recruits who are in basic training and AIT. Even if a soldier doesn’t have enough leave time saved up to take the break, and most won’t, the Army will allow him to go in the hole in order to take advantage of this time.

Originally Answered: Can you go home for Christmas during basic training? Yes, they have what is called Christmas Exodus during basic. I am not a fan of it because the Privates have to take leave and it puts them 14 days of leave in the hole before they even start their career.

Can you have a car in AIT?

You probably won’t be allowed to have a car at AIT unless you are prior service or already have an MOS and are just transitioning to a new one. Other than those two scenarios you will be treated just like the troops who are doing OSUT for your MOS (assuming Fort Gordon offers OSUT for your MOS).

Soldiers in AIT should bring their military-issued clothing, shaving and hygiene materials, towels and washcloths, and two sets of casual civilian clothing. Personal computers, tablets, cell phones and other electronic devices are authorized for use once a Soldier reaches Tier 1 status.

Unless you have a verified family emergency (death or serious injury/illness of an immediate family member), you’re not allowed to take leave during basic training. Most new recruits (except in the Coast Guard) then go directly from basic training to a military job school to discover how to do their new military job.
