Thermal conductivity of regular bricks is much higher than with fire bricks. A wood-fired kiln or a furnace are some of the applications that require firebricks. The denser properties also give the brick greater resistance to damage from abrasion. Regular bricks are not suited for these applications.

Any type of brick will suffice for the structure of a grill but firebrick is the most desirable to line the inside. Firebrick will withstand very high temperatures and is denser than most bricks allowing it to hold the heat.

What is the difference between fire brick and clay brick?

Common clay bricks will heat shock and fracture. Fire brick is composed of aluma/silica/shale clay, fired at ~2000F, and is much denser and more durable than iron oxide red clay. New ones are a bit spendy, but keep an eye on Craigslist for free bricks.

Are paving bricks fireproof?

How do you install pavers on a grill?

Drag a two-by-four across the sand until you have an even layer all the way across. Install your pavers. Start in a corner and work your way across, installing one row of pavers at a time. Tap each paver into place lightly with a rubber mallet, and leave 1/8-inch of space between each of the pavers.

The maximum heat resistance for red bricks and common firebricks is about the same. Red bricks can also be used in a brick oven. In ovens, red bricks will heat up, retain heat, cook, bake, roast, re-fire, absorb conduct store and hold the heat from wood fire and perform the same way as fire bricks do.
