Can you wear body camera at work?

There are no specific laws or regulations covering the use of body worn cameras. A code of practice has been produced by the Surveillance Camera Commissioner and the Information Commissioner which anyone or any organisation should refer to before using a body worn camera.

Who can use body cameras?

Seven states now mandate the statewide use of body-worn cameras by law enforcement officers. Those states are Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Carolina. The body-camera laws in all those states except South Carolina were put in place within the last year.

Can public wear body cam?

This is because bodycams are most often worn by people providing a service under contract. Other than to identify a trespasser or to protect property, anyone using a bodycam to monitor the activities of a member of the public in a public or private place or to identify an individual will require a license.

Surveillance and video cameras While it is not against the law to use video surveillance cameras on your property for security, it is illegal when the recording can be considered an “invasion of privacy,” or recording someone in a context where it would be reasonable for them to expect privacy.

Do you need a CCTV Licence for a body cam?

Individuals who view footage recorded by bodycams are likely to fall within the definition of public space surveillance (CCTV) activity. You would therefore not require a Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence.

Can I request police body cam footage UK?

Yes. Recorded material gathered with a body worn camera counts as police information. As such it can be obtained with a written request under data protection law.

Can I ask for security footage?

Most states only require a public records request to obtain public surveillance footage. Private entities have no obligation to release surveillance footage. Footage captured by a public entity, such as the police department, is generally a public record and available upon request.

How long do police keep body cam footage for?

31 days
All footage recorded by the body worn camera must also be retained in accordance with personal data guidelines. Non-evidential recordings must be disposed of after a maximum on 31 days (as per ACPO guidelines). A record must be made of the destruction of any non-evidential recording.
