Do Macs use Intel or AMD?

In November 2020, Apple began making a big change to its Mac lineup. Although Macs have used processors from Intel since 2006, new Macs from here on out will feature Apple-designed chips like the ones in iPhones and iPads.

Why does Apple not use Ryzen?

One reason is that at the time Apple had a focus on laptops and AMD processors was less efficient and consumed more power. The laptop segment is very important and having a short battery life was not an option, hence Intel processors (with better efficiency) became the selected processor.

Why does Mac use AMD?

Instead, Apple went with AMD GPUs publicly because of performance per watt issues, but the real reason is anybody’s guess. That performance to power ratio is most significant for the GPUs inside laptops and Nvidia continued to make graphics cards that could be used as eGPUs for Macs.

How do I know if my Mac is Intel based?

Does Apple make motherboard?

Apple designs the motherboards and then Foxconn makes them using standard components. Apple does not like adding extra bits on top of what the Intel chipset provides, hence why we don’t have support for things eSATA and USB 3.

Apple decided to ditch PowerPC and joined Intel bandwagon as Intel projected a very good and powerful CPU future road map. History may repeat now as AMD is taking Intel head-on and becoming Market Leader with better performance and cost advantage.
