  2. Always let your doctor know about any side effects or concerns you may have about using opioids.
  3. Avoid taking opioids with alcohol and other substances or medications.

  • limiting inappropriate use of prescription opioids;
  • reducing the flow of illicit opioids (like heroin);

How is Narcan administered?

NARCAN (naloxone) may be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously. The most rapid onset of action is achieved by intravenous administration, which is recommended in emergency situations.

New research from Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston shows its effectiveness. A review of emergency medical services data from Massachusetts found that when given naloxone, 93.5\% of people survived their overdose.

If you are the lone rescuer, perform rescue breathing and/or CPR for 2 minutes before leaving the victim to get help and supplies (naloxone, AED). Administer naloxone when available. In an out of hospital setting, naloxone can be administered via spray in the nose (2 mg) or with a needle into the arm (0.4 mg).
