So sed -e ‘s/foo/$THIS/’ will substitute the word foo with the literal string $THIS. But, if you use double quotes, the shell will do variable substitution. So, if you use: sed -e “s/foo/$THIS/” then foo will get substituted with the value of the variable THIS.
