Is a spaceplane possible?
All spaceplanes to date have been rocket-powered but then landed as unpowered gliders. Three types of spaceplanes have successfully launched to orbit, reentered Earth’s atmosphere, and landed: the Space Shuttle, Buran, and the X-37. Many more spaceplanes have been proposed, but none have reached flight status.
What happened to Spaceplanes?
Tragically, two missions failed with the loss of their crews – the Challenger vehicle exploding shortly after launch in 1986 and Columbia breaking-up on re-entry in Feb. 2003. Despite extensive latter development work, for astronaut safety the Shuttle was clearly not a reliable spacecraft.
Why SSTO is not possible?
The principal complicating factors for SSTO from Earth are: high orbital velocity of over 7,400 metres per second (27,000 km/h; 17,000 mph); the need to overcome Earth’s gravity, especially in the early stages of flight; and flight within Earth’s atmosphere, which limits speed in the early stages of flight due to drag.
What is faster a jet or rocket?
Rockets definitely fly faster than jets. A supersonic airplane can fly faster than the speed of sound (1,236 kmh or 768 mph). The SR-71 Blackbird holds the record for fastest jet, flying at 3,418 kmh (2,124 mph). Rockets have to reach that speed to escape Earth’s gravitational pull to get to space.

The North American X-15 rocket-powered research aircraft bridged the gap between manned flight within the atmosphere and manned flight beyond the atmosphere into space. After completing its initial test flights in 1959, the X-15 became the first winged aircraft to attain velocities of Mach 4, 5, and 6.
Why do rockets have stages?
Because the amount of fuel it takes to launch a rocket is so high, modern rockets use a staging system. Once a stage has emptied out all its fuel, it detaches and returns to Earth so that the second stage can keep going without having to drag along the extra weight of the empty fuel tanks.
