How do I get my child over fear of bugs?

As a clinical psychologist, I will often recommend that parents take the following steps to help kids manage their fears:

  1. Put a label on it.
  2. Model calm behavior.
  3. Educate yourself and your child.
  4. Avoid over exposure.
  5. Start off by observing.
  6. Go on a bug hunt.
  7. Teach positive self-talk.
  8. Distract and relax.

Kids can develop a fear following an experience, like a scary bug landing on them, or can develop them as a result of their creative imagination. Things like dogs, storms, masks, the dark, or an automatic toilet flusher are all common fears. It makes sense, these things are unpredictable.

Kids like bugs. In our experience, kids can get especially excited about insects because they see them all the time – they have played with them in their yards, tasted them (perhaps), and probably spend time trying to burn them with a magnifying glass.
