Is samadhi and enlightenment same?

Firstly, samadhi is not enlightenment. The term “enlightenment” was borrowed from the European Enlightenment movement of the 18th century and emphasized reason. Both the Buddhist “enlightenment” and the yogic or Hindu “liberation” imply finality, a completion.

What does enlightenment mean in yoga?

Enlightenment is a state of awakened understanding. It can be described as the transcendence of suffering and desire in order to obtain spiritual liberation (moksha). According to the teachings of yoga, enlightenment is the goal of all meditation and yogic practices — physical, mental or spiritual.

If you dedicate time to your practice of dharana (concentration) and dhyana (meditation), you may experience a sudden escalation into samadhi. When in samadhi, you will experience pure awareness and consciousness and may feel you have transcended the limitations of the body.

For Buddhists, enlightenment is referred to as attaining nirvana, while for Hindus this is referred to as moksha, or becoming one with Brahman, the supreme god. The concept of enlightenment is similar in the two religions, but they differ on the path towards achieving it.
