What happens if you get pregnant in the barracks?

When a soldier becomes pregnant in the Army she is given the option to leave the military under honorable conditions or become non-deployable for the duration of her pregnancy.

Can pregnant soldiers live in the barracks?

(a) Pregnant Soldiers may choose to reside off-post in a private rental or apply for on-post housing; however, the Soldier should not sign a lease agreement until their third trimester (6 months).

When can a pregnant soldier move out of the barracks?

A single pregnant soldier can move off-post and receive BAH w/o dependent when they reach 28 weeks in the pregnancy. A CNA will be issued effective the 28th week date or lease date, whichever is later. Upon the birth of the child, the soldier will be required to change BAH to the with dependent rate.

At most locations, single members can elect to move out of the dormitory and get a place off-base at their own expense. That means the government will not give them BAH (Housing Allowance), nor will the government give them a food allowance.

It varies from service-to-service and base-to-base, but in general, you can expect to be allowed to move off base and get paid for it, when you make the pay grade of E-4 (over 4 years of service), or E-5. Typical housing allowances will cover all or a majority of the rent for members qualified for it.
