What happens when you declare an emergency with ATC?

ATC Coordinates An Emergency Response For You Once a pilot has declared an emergency, a chain of events is initiated by ATC. If necessary, controllers will assist the pilot in finding a suitable airport for landing, and begin coordinating with the control facility for that airport.

How do you declare an emergency?

An emergency can be either a DISTRESS or URGENCY condition, as defined in the Pilot/Controller Glossary. NOTE − A pilot who encounters a DISTRESS condition may declare an emergency by beginning the initial communication with the word MAYDAY, preferably repeated three times.

When a pilot is uncertain of an ATC clearance, that pilot shall immediately request clarification from ATC. (b) Except in an emergency, no person may operate an aircraft contrary to an ATC instruction in an area in which air traffic control is exercised.

Why does ATC need to know what to do in an emergency?

As we’ll detail later on, ATC needs this information to begin coordinating a response. According to FAR 91.3, “In an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action, the pilot in command may deviate from any rule of this part to the extent required to meet that emergency.”

Pilots should report to ATC the time and altitude/flight level at which the aircraft reaches the clearance limit and report leaving the clearance limit. In the event of two-way communications failure, pilots are required to comply with 14 CFR Section 91.185.
