What is a lash reflex?
The efferent limb is via the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). The eyelash reflex can be elicited by gently brushing a gloved finger across the patient’s eyelashes and watching for reflexive blinking (contraction of the orbicularis oculi) in response to the stimulus.
What can trigger the blink reflex?
The corneal blink reflex is caused by a loop between the trigeminal sensory nerves and the facial motor (VII) nerve innervation of the orbicularis oculi muscles. The reflex activates when a sensory stimulus contacts either free nerve endings or mechanoreceptors within the epithelium of the cornea.
How do you know if you have a corneal reflex?
Approaching his eye from the side, out of his line of vision, lightly touch a thin strand of clean cotton (as from a cotton ball) to his cornea. Observe for blinking and tearing in that eye (direct corneal reflex). At the same time, observe whether his other eye blinks (consensual corneal reflex).

How is Palpebral reflex tested?
Palpebral reflex: Touch the medial canthus of the eye with a finger, cotton tip applicator, hemostat, or pen; the blink should be complete. Figure 3. Vibrissae response: Touch the upper lip; the patient may move the lip only or turn the head away.
What happens if you stop breathing during anesthesia?
Hypoxia can cause brain damage or even damage to other organs. The longer this occurs, the more damage there will be. If this does occur to a patient, it can result in depression, heart failure, an increased heart rate, and even high blood pressure long after the surgery is completed.
