What is conduction loss in transistor?

Conduction losses are simply the product of the current flowing through a switch or diode when it is forward biased (i.e. – turned on) and the voltage drop across it. The problem is determining what the actual voltage drop is at any given time, because this changes with temperature and current.

What is the main difference between a MOSFET and a BJT transistor?

1. BJT is a Bipolar Junction Transistor, while MOSFET is a Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor. 2. A BJT has an emitter, collector and base, while a MOSFET has a gate, source and drain.

How can Mosfet losses be reduced?

In general, a higher switching frequency and higher input voltage require a lower QG (gate charge) to cut down the switching losses in the switch MOSFET (Q1). For a rectifier MOSFET (Q2), low RDS(on) is most important, but don’t ignore the gate power.

Why are the switching losses higher in BJTs than MOSFETs?

BJTs switch more slowly than MOSFETs and high transient power can be dissipated during switching transitions when there is simultaneous high voltage and current present so they generally have higher switching losses.

Like any transistor, BJT can amplify a signal or switch a high power load using a very small signal. In terms of the architecture of BJT, three big terms come to play.

What happens when a MOSFET is turned off?

MOSFETs are majority carrier device, means flow of current inside the device is carried out either flow of electrons (N-Channel MOSFET) or flow of holes (P-Channel MOSFET). So when the device turns off, reverse recombination process won’t happen. It leads to short turn ON/OFF times.

On the other hand, to work as a closed switch, a BJT works in saturation mode, there are a high collector current and zero collector voltage, meaning ideally there is zero power consumed by the BJT. Remember the sentence, “ They are a preferred option for low-current applications ”?
