What is DR and BDR in OSPF?

In an OSPF broadcast network, OSPF elects one router to serve as the designated router (DR) and another router on the segment to act as the backup designated router (BDR). This minimizes the amount of repetitive information that is forwarded on the network. OSPF forwards all messages to the designated router.

How many adjacencies are there in OSPF?

DR and BDR n x (n – 1)/2 adjacencies must be established. Any route change on a router is transmitted to other routers, which wastes bandwidth resources. OSPF resolves this problem by defining a DR and a backup designated router (BDR). After a DR is elected, all routers send routing information only to the DR.

Keep in mind that a given OSPF speaker in your network can have some interfaces that are designated and others that are backup designated, and others that are non-designated. If no router is a DR or a BDR on a given subnet, the BDR is first elected, and then a second election is held for the DR.

How does OSPF choose DR and BDR?

Two rules are used to elect a DR and BDR:

  1. router with the highest OSPF priority will become a DR. By default, all routers have a priority of 1.
  2. if there is a tie, a router with the highest router ID wins the election. The router with the second highest OSPF priority or router ID will become a BDR.

  • Broadcast—By default, OSPF considers the network type as broadcast. On a broadcast network, hello, LSU, and LSAck packets are multicast to 224.0.
  • NBMA—OSPF packets are unicast on an NBMA network.
  • P2MP—No link is P2MP type by default.
  • P2P—On a P2P network, OSPF packets are multicast to 224.0.
