What is function of balancing drum in centrifugal compressor?

The balance drum is a device designed to balance axial thrust generated by impellers; it is usually combined with a thrust bearing which serves to compensate a small amount of residual axial thrust.

How does a balance drum work?

Balance discs and drums are essentially similar things. They work to balance axial thrust by using pump discharge pressure fluid to act on a known area to create a known force (force = pressure/area).

What is a balance flow pump?

The balancing flow is the volume flow (Qbal) required to operate the balancing device of a centrifugal pump. Although it increases the clearance gap losses, it still constitutes an efficient and cost-saving design for axial thrust balancing.

How can the efficiency of a centrifugal pump be increased?

7 ways to improve the energy efficiency of your pump

  1. Avoid oversizing the pump.
  2. Impeller trimming.
  3. Variable frequency drives.
  4. Parallel pumping systems.
  5. Limit pipework pressure loss.
  6. Eliminate unnecessary use.
  7. Carry out maintenance.

What is the purpose of a balance piston?

The balance piston is provided with a cross-sectional area where discharge pressure is imposed on one end of the piston and suction pressure on the other, partially negating the unbalanced axial force due to the impellers.

How do you balance an axial thrust in a centrifugal pump?

The axial thrust is balanced by various methods like balancing chamber and holes, pump out vanes, balancing ring and disc and by using balancing drum. By reducing the pressure in the space between the back shroud and the casing wall, the axial thrust is also balanced.

What is the force used to move water into the inlet side of a centrifugal pump?

A centrifugal pump converts rotational energy, often from a motor, to energy in a moving fluid. The two main parts that are responsible for the conversion of energy are the impeller and the casing. The impeller is the rotating part of the pump and the casing is the airtight passage which surrounds the impeller.

What is the function of the balancing drum?

THE BALANCING DRUM IS A HOLLOW CYLINDER MOUNTED ON PUMP SHAFT (RED ONE IN THE DRAWING). PRESSURE ACTS ON THE DRUM TOWARDS LEFT AND TOWARDS RIGHT ON THE IMPELLER. THESE TWO CANCEL EACH OTHER THEREBY REDUCING AXIAL THRUST.

Why does a barrel pump need a balance disk?

With a barrel pump, it is much more difficult to find a good way to direct the flow path through a set of opposed impellers. So instead, they point all the impellers in the same direction and use a balance disk or drum on the end. The balance disk is just after the last stage so it has full discharge pressure on one side.

What are the different types of balancing devices in centrifugal pumps?

In order to absorb the axial thrust in multistage centrifugal pumps, essentially three different types of balancing devices are known: balancing disk, balancing piston and stepped piston. The latter is constructed, in the form predominantly in use, as a double piston.

What is a balance disk on a vacuum cleaner?

The balance disk is just after the last stage so it has full discharge pressure on one side. A line is routed from the other side of the balance disk back to the suction. The size of the drum is made so that it provides almost as much net thrust as all the impellers combined.
