What is high levels of ALT SGPT?

An ALT test measures the level of alanine aminotransferase, also called ALT or SGPT. ALT is one of the enzymes that help the liver convert food into energy. High levels of these enzymes can be a sign that the liver is injured or irritated, and the enzymes are leaking out of the liver cells.

What is very high ALT levels?

High levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) can indicate a liver problem but do not necessarily mean you have a health condition. Very elevated levels of ALT may be suggestive of liver damage from hepatitis, infection, liver cancer, or liver disease. High ALT levels may also be a side effect of certain medications.

Very low levels of ALT may also pose health risks and increase frailty. One study found that low ALT levels in people with coronary heart disease increased the risk of long term mortality. ALT levels that are 17 U/L may predict an increased risk of frailty and increased mortality.

It may take up to 6 months before ALT levels will begin returning back to a normal range. Medication, illicit drugs, and other substances that may cause acute liver damage have been known to create ALT SGPT blood test results that are higher than 5,500.

What happens if my ALT test results are abnormal?

There may be additional testing required if the other blood tests that were ordered with the ALT test have abnormal results as well. There may be medical significance in a low ALT test result that falls outside of the scope of liver damage or disease.
