What is it like to work at Duolingo?

You get to work with bright, fun, talented people on big, inspiring problems. The people around you are exceptionally curious and kind. The company is hugely ambitious and has a ton of room to grow. Compensation for some roles is on the low side compared to the companies Duolingo wants to compete with for talent.

Is Duolingo a good company?

Why are you interested in working for Duolingo?

It would be my dream to work at Duolingo because I get to use all my languages in my work, I get to work on something that I use every single day, and I get to help millions of people around the world appreciate cultures that are different from their own.

Is Duolingo a waste?

It’s a waste of time. In fact, it’s just as bad as the education system Von Ahn criticizes. Duolingo outsources its translation services, allowing for awkward sentences to slip in undetected. And translation (the core of its platform) is already widely known to be an ineffective way to learn a language.

Does Duolingo actually send threatening messages?

The actual notifications aren’t even that threatening — it’s the personal disappointment that follows. There are no stakes when it comes to learning with an app. There’s no risk of failing a midterm, or lowering your GPA, or losing credits and repeating a required class.
