What is knurling and what is its purpose?

Knurling is a process of impressing a diamond shaped or straight line pattern into the surface of a workpiece by using specially shaped hardened metal wheels to improve its appearance and to provide a better gripping surface.

How does a Knurl work?

When performed on the grip, knurling creates a patterned texture to prevent hand slippage. Rather, it creates the textured surface either through pressure or by cutting away some of the material. Knurling tools are designed with a specific pattern that, when pressed against a workpiece, creates the same pattern.

What is happening when you are knurling?

Knurls have V-shaped teeth that deform, displace or push the material rather than cut it. The embossed patterns can be decorative, but more often act as hand grips and are commonly seen on handles, knobs or rollers. Diagonal, diamond and straight are the three most common patterns generated by knurling wheels.

What are the types of knurling operation?

According to the patterns produced, the knurled portions are called straight knurling, cross knurling or spiral knurling.

What is the speed used for knurling?

For convenience, Knurling is often performed at the same speeds used for turning operations when using high speed steel tool bits. But to prevent seizing of the rolls on the pin, we recommend a maximum surface speed of about 150 SFPM (Feet/Min) or 50 m/min.

Can knurling be done by hand?

Knurling can be done either by machine or hand. Hand knurling uses a rolling roll that creates the desired pattern on the workpiece. Hand knurling creates the patterns primarily uses pressure. When the worker runs the knurling tool across the surface of the workpiece, it creates a textural indention on the object.

What is the meaning of knurling?

Definition of knurl 1 : a small protuberance, excrescence, or knob. 2 : one of a series of small ridges or beads on a metal surface to aid in gripping.

Is knurling a metal cutting operation?

Knurling is a special machining operation, it’s metal forming action can be done manually or on CNC lathes, while not a cutting operation. CNC knurling tools act on the parts will produce depressions or indentations on the surface of the part when it is moving along the horizontal axis.

How many knurling tools are there?

Metal knurling becomes easy using knurling tools. A knurling tool can generate three different types of shapes: straight lines. diamond patterns.

Can you knurl stainless steel?

When knurling stainless steels, it is important not to roll any longer than necessary as this material work hardens as it is formed. Then to knurl, move the holder so that the two wheels are as close to the centerline as possible to minimize the knurling pressure on work spindle and cross slide.

How deep is a knurl?

Knurl Specification and Tool Size Chart Table

Diameter Pitch 160
Approx Depth of tooth or Increase in Knurled Dia. 0.009
Diameter of Blank Knurl Dia. No. of Teeth in Knurled Circum.
0.094 0.103 15
0.125 0.134 20

What are the advantages of knurling?

Large range of holders especially for forming.

  • Space-saving construction and therefore suitable for all type of sliding headstock lathes.
  • Long running life of knurling rolls due to sharply pointed and finely milled profiles.
  • Fine graduation of standard pitches from 0,3 to 2,0 mm.
  • Same knurling rolls for cutting longitudinal and cross knurls.

    What is Knurl pitch?

American Standard ASA B94.6-1984 describes the diametral pitch knurl system. Diametral pitch knurls are designed to track uniformly on fractional size stock up to 1″ in multiples of 1/32″ or 1/64″. They are held to closer tolerances for this purpose.

    What is cut knurling?

Cut Knurlers are used for holding knurl wheels to cut a pattern or gripping surface on medium- to large-sized workpieces. They are used at higher speeds than bump knurlers. Ideal for creating sharp corners on softer materials. Scissor & Straddle Knurlers are designed to clamp/hold a pair of opposing knurls.

    What is a knurling tool?

A knurling tool is used in conjunction with a lathe to emboss the ends of metal tubes and shafts. The embossed grooves may act as hand grips for the user or better traction for rubber or plastic covers.
