What is Ö in English?

Ö, or ö, is a character that represents either a letter from several extended Latin alphabets, or the letter “o” modified with an umlaut or diaeresis. In languages without such vowels, the character is known as an “o with diaeresis” and denotes a syllable break, wherein its pronunciation remains an unmodified [o].

Œ (minuscule: œ) is a Latin alphabet grapheme, a ligature of o and e. In medieval and early modern Latin, it was used to represent the Greek diphthong οι and in a few non-Greek words, usages that continue in English and French. (Old English ēðel “estate, ancestral home”).

How to Type O umlaut?

    What does U with 2 dots mean?

    In Dutch a u with two dots occurs in a small number of words to indicate that the u belongs to the next syllable, such as in geüpload (uploaded) and geüpdatet (updated). It also occurs in the German loanword überhaupt (at all). These are the only examples I can think of.
