The “AUM” symbol (or OM – the symbol in the center) symbolizes the Universe and the ultimate reality. It is the most important Hindu symbols. It is considered AUM (OM) which represents the three aspects of God: the Brahma (A), the Vishnu (U) and the Shiva (M).

What is Om mantra Meditation?

Om mantra meditation is a simple chanting of the syllable “om” (or “aum”) during meditation. A mantra can be a sound or single syllable like om, or it can be a word, phrase or longer recitation, and it is used in yoga to focus the mind in preparation for meditation and/or to deepen meditation.

How to practice:

  1. Sit in a comfortable meditation posture with dignity and ease.
  2. Take 3 deep breaths to interiorize your awareness.
  3. On your next exhale (outbreath), chant AUM slowly.
  4. Notice the silence and lingering vibration in your body during the inhale between two repetitions AUM chanting.

What is the difference between Om and AUM?

Om is basically a monosyllabic word, as compared to Aum, which is tri-syllabic. Om is simply pronounced the way it is written as opposed to Aum, which is pronounced aa-uu-eemm. In Sanskrit, ‘O’ is a diphthong sound. The difference between the two variations, Aum and Om, developed only due to transliteration.

What does Om chanting do?

Om is the basic sound of the universe; chanting it symbolically and physically tunes us into that sound and acknowledges our connection to everything in the world and the Universe. The rhythmic pronunciation and vibrations have a calming effect on the body and the nervous system similar to the effects of meditation.

What is the frequency of the sound ‘Aum’?

Aum vibrates at 432 Hz, which is quite low within our hearing range. This means that the sound wave is longer and its frequency of vibration slower than a high-pitch sound at, let’s say, 15KHz. The physical result of this is that these sound waves will affect bigger surface areas.
