Arigato gozaimasu! / Thank you! This is a polite way of saying “thank you”. While traveling in Japan, this is probably the most basic “thank you” phrase you’ll be using.

What is the difference between Arigato and arigato gozaimasu?

The word “arigatou” is often seen written in the Japanese alphabet of hiragana (ありがとう), and many of us are probably also familiar with the longer “arigatou gozaimasu” (ありがとうございます), which is a more formal way to thank someone.

Where does Gozaimasu come from?

In classical Japanese, ござる (gozaru) was the polite form of ある (aru) applicable to both animate and inanimate objects. It survives in modern Japanese only in the inflected forms ございました (gozaimashita), ございましたら (gozaimashitara), ございます (gozaimasu), and です (desu), originally a contraction of でございます (de gozaimasu).

Literally, arigatou gozaimasu means “this is a rare thing”. The ari of arigatou is properly spelled 有 or 有り: “to exist”. The gatou comes from 難く (kataku), meaning “with difficulty”.

What does O Hayou gozaimasu mean?

It is said that “ohayou gozaimasu” originally meant ‘glad to have you here early’. It seems to have been used to express someone’s gratitude to have someone else at a certain place early in the morning.
