What medications disqualify you from being a pilot?

These medications include narcotic analgesics, stimulants, sedatives, hypnotics, amphetamines, barbiturates, anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, and antipsychotics (neuroleptics).

What prescription drugs does the military test for?

The expanded test will test for 26 drug types, including heroin, codeine, morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, and a number of synthetic cannabinoids (also known as spice) and benzodiazepine sedatives. Active members of the military are subject to random drug testing three times per year.

Can pilots take anti anxiety medication?

Under the new policy, the FAA will, on a case-by-case basis, issue special medical certificates to pilots who take one of four antidepressants: fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), citalopram (Celexa) and escitalopram (Lexapro).

In the military’s scheme of things, serious disorders such as major depression, anxiety or schizophrenia may be grounds for medical discharge or retirement, usually depending on their severity and amenability to treatment.

The most commonly prescribed are alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan).

As of May 1, 2012, the military has two new drugs in its testing repertoire. Henceforth, service members may be tested for hydrocodone and benzodiazepines, two of the most commonly abused prescription drugs on the market. Servicemen and servicewomen are randomly tested for drugs at least once a year.
