What was the Bru deal?

Details of the agreement include 40*30 sq. ft of residential plots to each displaced Families, a fixed deposit of rupees 4 lakhs, aid of 5,000 cash per month for 2 years, Rupees 1.5 lakhs to build house and free rations for 2 years from the date of resettlement.

Who are Bru migrants?

Due to attack on minority Reang tribes by Mizo villagers, a number of Bru (Reang) families from Western Mizoram migrated to Northern Tripura from October 1997 onwards. The number of such Bru migrants who are sheltered in six relief camps set up in Kanchanpur District of Tripura is about 30,000 ( 5000 families).

Twenty-three years after ethnic clashes in Mizoram forced 37,000 people of the Bru (or Reang) community to flee their homes to neighbouring Tripura, an agreement was signed in January, 2020 to allow 32,000 of them remaining in the camps after nine phases of repatriation to permanently settle in Tripura.
