Why BJT consumes more power than MOSFET?

MOSFET is usually more efficient switches for power supplies. BJT will consume more power because it’s wasting current when it’s switch on. Also the BJT generally has a 0.3v voltage drop in the input pin, and it takes a lot of base current to do that. Transistors are often connected together to form useful circuits.

Why does conduction loss more in a MOSFET?

For the MOSFET, the input loss is due to the total gate charge, switching frequency and the drive voltage. Nowadays total gate charge of MOSFETs is already very small so the loss is also dramatically decreased. 4. MOSFET is reliable for high current application.

Why might a MOSFET be preferred over a BJT as a switch?

Mosfet provides a very good isolation between the gate and the other two terminals compared to bjt. MOSFET can handle more power compared to BJT. The mosfet has a very low power loss and a high speed. Voltage signals can easily operate a mosfet, so it is used in many digital circuits.

Why MOSFET is smaller than BJT?

In terms of manufacturing size, FETs can be manufactured to be much smaller than BJTs. This makes them more efficient in commercial circuit design. Being that FETs are smaller, they take up less space on a chip.

How does MOSFET reduce power loss?

In general, a higher switching frequency and higher input voltage require a lower QG (gate charge) to cut down the switching losses in the switch MOSFET (Q1). For a rectifier MOSFET (Q2), low RDS(on) is most important, but don’t ignore the gate power.

MOSFET consumes much lower power while switching at high-frequency due to its faster switching speed. This is due to the fact that MOSFET conducts by gate-oxide controlled field-effect and not electron/hole recombination (which is slow) as in BJT. The gate drive circuit is much simpler in MOSFETs.
